Feral Cats

Feral Cats

Feral Cats

Groups of cats may be found living in places such as factories, hospital grounds, parks and gardens. Some of these cats may be strays, lost or abandoned and could be re-domesticated but others - born in the wild - are shy of people and difficult to handle.

In rural areas the feral cat populations are self-supporting and stable in colony size, depending on food availability in a territory. In more highly populated areas, food sources such as waste bins are supplemented by people who put out food for these cats, and wandering cats are attracted.

Any fertile females in the group will produce kittens in litters of up to eight, twice per year, and so the colony will grow.

Cats are often tolerated as rodent catchers, or for the companionship they provide, especially in hospitals, but as numbers increase they become a public nuisance and they need to be removed and humanely disposed of.

Control

Successful control of feral cats requires a close understanding of the pest species, it's biology, lifestyle and habits.
